[There's a quiet crunching sound before Mulder speaks up, sounding thoughtful.]

Show of metaphorical hands. Or antennae, whichever you're partial to: Who here has been kidnapped for a special one-on-one date with our captors? I'd like to arrange an off-journal meeting to speak about your personal experiences if anyone happens to have some free time. It shouldn't take long, just a few minutes. I'll be hanging around the shops in town most of the day, I've got some... supplies I've been meaning to find. [Still looking for a basketball, woe and alas.] We can always head elsewhere from there, though.

I understand that it's a sensitive topic for most people, and it's all right if you'd rather not talk about it. Or if you'd rather be anonymous, just slip a note under my door detailing anything you can remember about the experience itself. Anything at all, before, during, after. Your answers will be kept in confidence. I'm in Community Building 7, Floor 2, Room 10.

Both of those answers are correct, so you have studied a bit about me then. [He sighs again.] The affliction I was suffering from is a disease known as tuberculosis, I'm certain you're familiar with it.

[He nods.] Yeah, I know about it. That's too bad, that you had to go through that. Are you in better health here, at least?

[A nod.] Yes, I am in better health here. It is thanks to my friends along the doctor I am seeing though and my will to actually try being healthier.

The better technology probably makes a difference too. I hate to admit that there are some advantages to being here, they just come at such a high price...

If I can be told by a doctor that I'm able to live instead of dying, I'd rather pay that price.

I don't blame you. I guess it's a better existence for a lot of people here, compared to the alternative.

After learning of the technology in this world, my world seems much more primitive.

Some of it is even beyond mine, at least the Malnosso's brand of equipment. I guess you lucked out in some aspects by coming here.

Going from an era that still used gas lamps to one that uses electricity takes quite a bit of adapting to.

I'm sure it was quite the adjustment... but you're getting by well enough now, I presume?

Well once I first arrived here, things were as though they were like in my world until the village received electricity. That took some getting use to, but I did a bit before I was sent home. [His memory of being sent home were a bit hazy, but he does remember waking up and thinking he had a dream then went about his daily life until he was brought back here.] Being here the second time wasn't so terrible.

You were sent home and returned? [He's heard of that happening.] Do you know how much time passed before you were brought back?

From what I remember it had turned April before I departed and when I was returned, it was...September. [He's really thinking about this.] So only a few months.

How much time had elapsed from your perspective? Was it different than the time elapsed here?

When I was returned home during the time it was April here, it was October there and only a matter of a few hours. The days went by as normal for me back home, but when I fell asleep again some time during those brief weeks and returned here, it was September. So initially I went backwards in terms of months, but forwards in terms of years.

It seems like there often is some kind of time discrepancy when people are sent home and returned... No set pattern to that, either.

I do not understand myself, Mister Mulder. Nor do I understand why the Malnosso take away the memories of those who are sent home and only return them when they're brought here.

Yeah, I've always wondered about that, if it could be a protective measure to keep people on the outside from being able to help those of us stuck in the barrier. Not that I know how they'd be able to do that, but I'm sure things look very different on the other side of that barrier.

But since we are on the topic of such things, perhaps I might be able to ask you a few questions?

[It's only fair, since he's been going around asking so many things of everyone. The investigative side of him hasn't gone away despite a change in settings.]

I was rather curious as to how the experiments have been affecting you during your time here.

[He considers that a moment.]

I've only been through two, so I might still be a bit of a rookie. The species change was... well, honestly, not as bad as it could have been. Uncomfortable at first, but being an extraterrestrial life form was pretty fascinating.

[A pause.]

The alternate life though, that was... a difficult experience, in the aftermath.

The alternative life experiment was tough on all of us, myself included. [He looks towards the window.] So you're not alone.

At last we can all relate, those of us who went through it. No one deserves to have their memories tampered with like that.

Exactly, especially with those whom we love.
