[Late at night, Mulder is up and about, wandering aimlessly. He's just received Scully's letter so of course that's sending him into a bit of a broody mindset. Sleep? Ha, no, he's not planning to sleep for a while.]

[On the one hand, she's free of all of this. On the other... she's gone. His partner. The one person he trusts more than anyone. And what she's returning home to doesn't sound very pleasant. It's the future relative to him so he has no way of knowing just how safe she really is. He's not supposed to worry, but he can't stop himself from doing so anyway. The troubling thoughts that always come up at these times are there to bother him, too...]

How do we know they really send us home when we vanish from here, anyway?

[Yeah, this is what happens when you overthink everything.]

For anyone who knew... anyone who knows her, Dana Scully has left the building. I'm sure she's relieved to be somewhere a bit more down to earth.

I agree. We come from a variety of worlds and experiences, with different and new technologies and powers. The likelihood of none of this being effective, all of it being repressed, is too small to ignore.

Exactly. Even with the power cap, there are still many individuals capable of doing a great deal... of causing some serious upheaval to the state of things, if they wanted.

It also stands to reason that if the Malnosso consider us innocent victims of circumstances, and want to send us home, they would avoid anything that would interfere with those powers and our minds.

[But they don't. Which says something in itself.]

That's what I'm thinking, too. What are these "experiments" really trying to achieve? How can any of their effects be meant to help find a way out of here?

I could believe it, if they seemed to be leading towards a single goal. I could even believe the variances in effects are due to variances between worlds and people affected.

But there's no pattern to it at all.

[He's spent so much time methodically examining everything, making his files, thinking he could understand any of it like back home.]

None that I've discerned, either. You'd think it would become clear after so much time.

[Ami gives a faint smile.]

We seem to say this again and again, don't we?

[And it feels as tedious as saying that sounds. She's beat her head against it for far too long not to want an answer finally. Not to want something to tell her it's worth it, something she can still do.]

We really do seem to end up going in circles a lot of the time about these issues. I guess it comes with the situation.

[It really can be frustrating, especially for someone like him who is so set on solving mysteries and finding truths.]

Maybe we think, if we look at it often enough, we'll find something we've overlooked still.

I know I often hope that'll be the case. There's a lot about this whole thing that should become clear the more we understand.

It's possible. No research or methods are foolproof. The whole history of scientific progress comes from realizing that and continuing to investigate. In the process, we've learned many things we thought we understood were wrong.

There's no reason that shouldn't also be true here. We may find a way to change our situation.

Right... it's an ongoing process, and I'm sure we'll learn a lot more along the way, too.

I've already learned many new medical techniques and procedures from the other doctors. And I never had power like Nala's back home, either.

Getting to learn new powers has been pretty cool. I never had magic abilities back home, myself, but it's something I've always wanted to experience.

I'm grateful for everything I've learned from her. It could save a lot of lives if a power like that existed back in my world.

[As far as she knows, it doesn't. She's never come across healing powers like that, not among the senshi or their enemies. Even Usagi's powers had been different.]

It's come in handy for me, too, on more than one occasion. I think Nala's power could be considered the most useful of them all.

It's something everyone needs. [That's always been the real point of being a doctor, to her. When she was younger, it had been about pleasing Mama. It still is, in some ways - or at least, she's glad to make Mama proud. But when she found her path for herself, she was led to a profession where she'd be needed, relied on, and able to help.]

Especially for being sent out to battle as often as we are.

[Any sort of healing ability is worth knowing, and could be the difference between life and death out there...]

Not just here. Back home, too. That was part of why I wanted to become a Doctor.

[Inevitably, this gets him thinking of Scully, and her role as a medical doctor.]

It's a really important profession on any world... You can save a lot of lives in your line of work.

That's what I thought, too. I wanted to do something important with my life.

I hope that you've managed to feel that you've succeeded, so far?

I don't know if I've done anything really remarkable, but I've done my best in all of it. I'm proud of that fact, too.

Doing your best still makes it all worth it. You can look back without regretting anything, that way.

I might still have regrets, but I'll also know I did what I could.
