[There's a squelching sound of someone falling into a very muddy area. Then that someone curses under his breath, followed by the distinct sound of some very angry toads who he's disturbed. Many of whom also curse along with the general annoyed croaking.]

Hello? Who's there? Who said that? Scully, are you with me? Can you hear me? SCULLY!?!

[There's a pause, and more muddy squelching. And more grumpy voices in the background as Mulder appears to have fallen into a whole clan of toads. He seems to take this in stride though, thinking aloud as he tries to gain his bearings. He picks up the book that's near him and eyes it curiously. It's very out of place here, but he's already drawing his own conclusions.]

Let me guess. I've finally been abducted by aliens. I knew it was a matter of time, but somehow I always assumed the experience would involve less falling face down in the mud, and more probing.

Not that I want any probing, I'll pass on that opportunity.

So now the question is- aside from where the hell are my real clothes- where am I? My theories include afterlife or parallel dimension, maybe a mix of the two with a dash of government-initiated kidnapping thrown in. It's not every day you wake up in someone else's clothes with wings sprouting out of your back for no reason. Wings that hurt like a bitch when I pull on the feathers, I might add.

[Yeah he already tried that. Is it really any surprise he's already tried that?]

So what's going on here? Who's responsible for this? Was I subjected to an experiment of some kind? Kept imprisoned as a test subject and cast off to the wilderness as soon as they were done with me? Is this Russia? It better not be Russia. I didn't have such great accommodations the last time I went there.

[...and is it just him or are ALL of the toads in the area looking ready to gang up on him? He's deciding he's overstaying his welcome here. Time to get moving. In some direction. So Mulder can be found hurrying the rest of the way through the woods and into town. He's covered in mud and followed close behind by a whole bunch of very disgruntled toads.]

Yeah, unfortunately, it's real. So are the wings, and the talking animals. It's called Luceti.

You're in Luceti, and you're not going to find it that simple to get your bearings here, if you ask me. We're all trapped inside some sort of barrier. It hasn't responded well to any attempts to break it down. But there's food and shelter, some safety---you might be here for the long haul, lad.

Well...yes. Most of the people are nice enough, or at least willing to leave you alone, but it's not just them. The Malnosso experiment on people, sometimes alone, and at least once a month on the whole town. And then they draft us to fight their battles outside this place....

There's a river that runs through town and forks into two paths that each lead to a lake. If you find the river, you'll be able to find the town by walking in the direction against the current. Roughly halfway between each, there's watch station. Should you find it, tell me and I meet you there.

...and yes, the animals talk. I'm guessing you found that out the hard way?

[Which is some mix of intriguing and troubling, since Mulder would expect he'd at least have heard something about a place like this.]

Do they always give people such a friendly greeting? Stealing our clothes and other items and dropping us in this place?

Define 'long haul'? I can't exactly kick back here and wait. I've got a few things to get back to...

[He's moving along, getting to a much less muddy area. Every so often he hears quiet toad-noises in the background.]

And people haven't risen up against any of this? Who are these Malnosso? Are they aliens?

[He has to ask. HE HAS TO ASK. It's a possibility he's not ruling out, anyway...]

[Takes another careful look at her, and the axe, trying to figure that out. He has that feeling there's something to that.]

Defense against what?

Va...[ hmm. a rookie. maybe she should be gentle. ] Vandals. I hate vandals.

...Years? [What has he gotten into here exactly?!] Why keep us trapped here for so long?

[There's something in how she said that, he's just going to let it rest in the back of his mind for a while.]

You need a weapon like that to fend off against vandals?

[He looks around warily.]

...Look, if there are monsters of some kind in this forest, I'd like to know.

[ wetting her lips. ]

Oh, I know they're real, and not only because I've encountered them.

[Stepping along carefully, and he's starting to get excited about this, being held captive aside.]

So what's out here? Bigfoot? The Yeti? Moth Men? Werewolves?

[She can't help but chuckle a bit at that.]

Well, it could have been worse. At least you know now.

Once you reach town, I can show you where to find your things. For some reason, the Malnosso send our things with us, but never on hand. We have to find them in the shops.

Um...aliens? You mean, are they human or not? They are, sort of, they're also scientists, and somehow they've found a way to seal off this area and do whatever they want with it. That's why people haven't escaped; they can't. And it's hard to rise up when we can't find them or their headquarters.

They do that just to annoy us, don't they? But all right, thanks, I'd appreciate that. I'm Mulder, by the way.

[Even to him, this whole thing seems pretty surreal. At least he's not far from that river, so this won't take long...]

Right, following the water now...

There's got to be something we can do! I refuse to just give up.

[Well, he knows what he's going to spend his time here doing trying to find some way to get to these mad scientists.]

How many people do they have in this enclosure?

This isn't Russia, but it's very Cold War of you to think so.

You got the alien bit right, though. Well done. Do you work for UNIT?

[In Ianto's world, anyone who finds alien abduction unsurprising is either Torchwood, UNIT, or a nutter. And since Mulder isn't Torchwood, he's somewhere in column B or C, or possibly D; none of the above. Frankly though, at the moment, Ianto's placing his bets on C.]

Um...around three hundred, possibly a bit over that. I'm not sure of the exact numbers, but that can vary when they bring in new people.
