Looks like someone knew exactly what I wanted... or should I say, needed.

[The image focuses on a poster on the wall of Mulder's office area in his apartment. There are a bunch of other things pinned to the wall as well- mostly his own notes, and other things of interest he's collected over time here. But the poster is clearly the focus of the picture. Finally, Mulder moves in.]

Did anyone else catch sight of that sleigh in the sky on Christmas Eve? I know I saw something up there, and I'm pretty sure it wasn't a spaceship. This time.

You see... on my world, Santa Claus is a mythical character believed in by children... but I'm starting to wonder now if there might be something to that supposed legend of good old Saint Nick. It would explain the freaky little elves who were running around demanding things, too.

[Believing in children's fantasies is a bit of a stretch even for him usually, but after his sighting and the gift he wonders. Sure, it's just as much possible it's some trick of the Malnosso... but would that matter right now with what this means to him? He glances back to the poster. Back home, it had been burned up in that fire, along with a great deal of his work. Having it back gives him a feeling of hope and renewal.]

Maybe that's what Santa- or someone- wants to tell me. To keep believing, to never give up. It's a very different message than I'd have gotten from a fruitcake.

Oh, it's possible the nasty old god has moderated his actions for one reason or another.

But mostly I make this point as a reminder that all this nonsense about his jolly goodness is just that... nonsense. He was in it for a good meal before. He's no doubt in it for something else now.

And I thought I was paranoid.

Still, considering that he's been around for so long, I don't doubt that he's been through a great deal of change. But do you really think that there's a sinister purpose lurking in there?

Oh Mulder. You haven't even the slimmest idea what is lurking out there, do you.

[Loki has no problem admitting he's a bit paranoid. It's certainly helped keep him alive.]

I think it likely that he's figured out a blood price will no longer do, the way mortals have become to squeamish. So he'll have found something of equal value to replace it.

No one does anything for free. The goodness of their heart is a farcical concept indeed.

Well, I want to see and know everything I can about what's out there. I thought we were getting somewhere learning about the extraterrestrials back home, but I get here and it turns out that's only scratching the surface.

...though if Santa is feasting on mortal children's souls, I think someone better start rewriting the Christmas carols.

[He's not totally knocking the idea, mainly because he knows people always have ulterior motives. Always. Trust no one indeed. But it's just... this is Santa Claus they're talking about.]

The universe is larger than any care to think. And it is but one universe.

[He laughs.]

I can't really guess as to the disposition of the souls. Just that Santa Claus did hunger for the flesh of children.

What about parallel universes, then? Or alternate dimensions where there's variation on the experiences in this one. [Why yes, this is a man who spends far too much time thinking about this kind of thing.]

Hm... well, and that certainly does give a more sinister spin on the "he sees you when you're sleeping, he knows when you're awake" line. Which, frankly, is already pretty creepy outside of context.

Precisely. It's all rather... infinite.

...I don't think I'm familiar with that. And I think I am glad of that fact. Ugh.

I always figured it was vast like that, but never quite saw what that implied until I came here and realized how many worlds and variations of worlds exist...

[He gives an amused-but-also-disturbed laugh.] Thanks to you, I'll never see Santa in quite the same light again.

Humans aren't really mentally set up to comprehend vast numbers, from what I've observed.

[He laughs.] Glad to be of service.

[Yep. Every time he finds himself side-eyeing any representation of Santa, he will forever think of Loki.]

It's something that I want to understand... I've wanted it for as long as I can remember. So many people in my world aren't even willing to entertain the possibility of life beyond our planet, let alone other galaxies and dimensions and so forth...

Rather narrow-minded of them. Probability alone would say otherwise, even if you had not spoken with proof yourself.

What has made you so different?

For one, I'm more open-minded than most people... there are other believers out there, but we seem to be in the minority. Or we're usually laughed at for our beliefs. I'll admit, you can't trust every claim of paranormal activity that's ever made, although there are plenty of legitimate ones out there.

...I also saw proof firsthand, as a kid.

People in general prefer to see the world as a boring and uncomplicated thing. And I don't mean just your species.

Ah. That would certainly do it. What manner of proof?

Somehow, I don't doubt that. [Given how many different personalities and species he's seen around here.]

My younger sister was abducted by aliens when I was twelve years old. I was there when it happened, I saw the whole thing.

Ah, that must have been quite affecting. Which aliens?

The kind that want to colonize the planet by infecting humanity with a black oil virus containing what amounts basically to their life force... though in their standard form they're the grays most commonly reported in abduction cases.

I'm still searching for what really happened to my sister. After all these years.

Black oil virus. Hah. I don't think I've encountered that one. Maybe a bit of a hiccup between universes. Sounds revolting, though.

So that has become your driving quest, I take it.

Especially when said alien virus crawls into your eyes and nose so it can go take over your brain. Not a pretty sight going in, or out.

Anyway... yes. Finding my sister is the main reason why I became so obsessed with the paranormal, why I've sought to uncover everything that's being withheld about the extraterrestrials. I will know the truth of what really happened one day. I won't ever stop looking.

Very revolting. I'd definitely recall if I'd met a species like that.

A laudable enough quest.And most questions do have answers.

They may just not be the answers we like.

It's right up there as one of the ickiest things I've experienced, to put it scientifically. Although the man-sized flukeworm comes pretty close, along with the robotic cockroaches from space.

[Yep. This is Mulder's life.]

Most importantly, I want to find closure. No matter what form that answer might take. I've come so close, many times, but the full truth isn't quite in my grasp.

Mulder, I am beginning to think that there are gods such as me in your universe, and one of them is having a lovely time messing with you specifically.

What is still lacking, then?

[Mulder chuckles a little at the notion.] I always figured someone up there hated me, this just reinforces the idea.

I have yet to find out what really happened, to know where she is right now. I've seen things... I've run into clones of her, imitations created through their experiments... Really, of the vast conspiracies that I've uncovered, I feel I've only scratched the surface.

Paranoia is a valid survival mechanism.

Ah, I see. That would be quite vexing.

I like to think it's served me well over the years.

Vexing only begins to describe it. I've come across so many dead ends and false leads, I've found evidence only for someone to destroy it... but I've got to keep searching.

It has certainly kept me alive.

I wonder why there is such interest in keeping your separated. Are you some sort of royalty?
