[Mulder is hanging out somewhere in the forest, standing near a tree that's riddled with bullet holes. He's kind of... stroking the tree with an apologetic look on his face.]

Nothing like having a mix of blatant lies and delicate truths thrown all over the place for the whole world to see... like the rest of the effects weren't enough. Though I give them credit for the one about me being Elvis in a past life. If only.

Anyway, on to the reason I've opened the journal. Has anyone ever managed to reconnect with one of the spirits after losing touch with or outright offending one of them? I'm sure it varies on a case by case basis, but I wonder if it's much harder than the initial contact.

[Why, no, he absolutely did not have any tree-shooting-and-kicking-and-branch-breaking incidents when they were spreading rumors during the experiment. Nope. Not a thing like that at all, not him. Er... uh. Yeeeeeah, ok so he did have a bit of an angry outburst. At a tree. He couldn't help it, at the time they were spreading highly uncomfortable information. What's a guy to do but attempt an interrogation? He can't help it that he gets... overboard, sometimes, when his temper gets the better of him.]

[Speaking of uncomfortable, Mulder is spending an awfully lot of time hanging out near Scully's door. He has things he needs to say but doesn't know where to start.]

All I know is that you should listen or go out of your way to get to their area. Some of them gravitate and some don't. It'll take a long time to bond with a few of them... and um... hang on...

Looks like it doesn't say anything about it in the guide man... but if the spirits are anything like us? Imagine if your good buddy hasn't seen you in a long, long time. You're going to want to apologize first and give them time so I guess...

I think the best way would be to go to the areas specified to find them and to start over.

It's not the best advice and I'm sorry... but it looks like all we've got to go on. Well, unless someone responds to you who's reconnected.

Yeah, the Guide only gives so much to go on, unfortunately.

[It's one extra little bit of information he's never really come across on the spirits, which to him means it's definitely worth looking into. Something that's less explored.]

Thanks, anyway, though. I have a feeling you're right; they may not communicate exactly like us, but they do have distinct personalities and presumably also feelings... so it's important to consider those.

Out of curiosity, have you contacted any of them?

I haven't yet but, you know, the truth is out there.

I'm aiming for Hyt, myself, thanks to stuff in my world. Who were you keeping in touch with if I might ask?

[It never stops being surreal when people do things like this, though it's the first he's had quotes specifically happen.]

I've got Nala and Kipinn under my belt, been working on Sona on and off when I go for swims... but it's Faerun who I've recently chased off. [He knows she's a timid one, so all that shooting just could not have been good.] Maybe I'm not down to earth enough.

I mean no offense. You're a legend where I'm from.

[He grins.]

I still find it amazing we can bond with spirits and learn abilities in this place. Soon enough I hope to make that kind of a bond.

And if you've chased off someone shy, give her a day or two and offer an apology when you can. You never know when she's listening.

I did my best to ignore those trees. Ever since they started saying the most ridiculous things about my husband, I figured they were mostly lying, anyway.

As for reconnecting, it can be done. I don't think it's harder than before, at least with the friendly ones. But those who are more reclusive might need a bit of extra time.

Mostly lying. Only mostly. In my experience, putting truths together with lies is often more dangerous than just one or the other. You at least can cut through a lie to find the truth.

[It's a lot trickier dealing with both at once.]

Though I wouldn't want them making something up about Scully dressing me, so I can imagine how he feels.

Extra time, right. I'll prepare myself a nice mud bath and maybe set up recycling bins. [He's mostly kidding about that.] Though I'm glad to hear that you can make contact again.

Oh, it's possible. I've had to do a little of it myself, since I was gone or inactive for so long. It's hard to keep up bonds when you're away or sick, after all.

That's good to know... it hadn't occurred to me that the connections can sever when you're away on a long enough mission or kidnapping, but it's pretty logical. Hm... I guess I should be glad it's one of the friendlier ones and not one more prone to grudges.

It d-depends on the spirit in question. I'm sure Nala would be more understanding than, say, Hyt or-or one of the more prouder spirits like Eferin or Kipinn.

[ Helios doesn't quite sound like himself today, he probably won't for awhile, but he's trying to get over what happened with Apep. Focusing on helping others typically aids in that. ] Are you...having trouble?

[Eferin is definitely the last on his last to contact for that reason. He's dealt with his difficulty with fire, but even so, he doesn't particularly look forward to connecting with that element.]

I was hoping that might be the case, I'll have to see if I can reconnect somehow. [Mulder does take mental note of how off Helios sounds, just going to keep that in mind just in case.] What happened was my own fault, I'll admit that... I managed to scare one of them off.

Ah. I-I see. Well if it's a matter of just scaring them off I'm sure you'll be able to reconnect with them, most definitely. But...it might take a bit of time before they accept the contact. Perhaps...trying a little bit each day would help.

Faeren. Since she's on the shy side it took a lot of coaxing her out in the first place. Have you had much experience with her?

A little yes. She is quite shy. But perhaps you could try going out when it's, um, w-windy and seeing if-if she'll come out then?
