[Finally, after all this time! Mulder has found that much-desired basketball. He's in luck too, as it's well-inflated, not a sign of wear or tear on it. Too many times, he's come across half-deflated or otherwise messed up ones. But this one is perfect. It's as if there's finally some compensation for all the usual rounds of disappearances and so on. He's really needed this. He starts dribbling the ball right as he leaves the shop and continues bouncing the thing everywhere he goes throughout the day. It can also be heard in the background of his voice transmission.]

Does anyone have any unique birthday traditions they care to share? I wonder how similar these traditions might be between the worlds... Let's just say I'm curious, for purely theoretical reasons.

...By the way, is there anyone out there who'd be up for shooting some hoops or even getting together a pick-up game of basketball? Of course, we'd actually need to throw together a hoop somehow first, but minor details! If you've never played before, I promise I'll go easy on you.

[He still runs and things, after all... but playing any sort of game hasn't been possible until now.]

[There's just a second's hesitation before Ami takes the ball, dribbles, heads closer to the basket and shoots - from closer range, but she has the satisfaction of seeing her shot make it. She pumps her fist.]

Yosh!

Good one! [The excitement is contagious, he has to admit. He's only playing for fun himself, after all.]

Ah- Yours now, right? [She lightly bounces the basketball over to Mulder.]

This is sort of fun after all.

[He grins and starts bouncing along.]

[She looks shy for a moment.]

I just thought... if it was your birthday... you shouldn't spend that alone.

[She has experience in this area. It wasn't a nice feeling.]

[So does he, sadly. He spent a lot of them alone, back home.]

And, actually... I'm really glad you let me join in. [She grins, and she's ready to play some more.]

Good, I'm having fun too. As crazy as it seems, in a place like this...

[And off he goes to start back in playing.]

Things seem too serious to be able to just play a game of basketball, don't they sometimes?

Yeah, experiments and kidnappings really kill any funloving mood. At least we don't have to wait for another Lucetiland moment to get some kind of break, now...

[He'll definitely be coming out to hang out here and shoot hoops as much as he can.]

Have you considered further ways to change the situation?

Considered, plenty of things. [Bouncing the ball along.] Nothing that's really stood out so far, unfortunately. I keep running into roadblocks. Have you heard of anyone making any progress lately?

[Now that she's growing more comfortable with playing with him, Ami puts herself between Mulder and the basket, blocking him rather rigorously.]

Not yet. But with everything happening lately, it's been hard to focus on that. I still believe that may be one of the purposes of the 'experiments'.

[Which means Mulder steps up his game, looking for just the right moment...]

Keep us from making any substantial progress on anything. Yeah, I could see that. The interruption is just enough to throw us off, not to mention recovery time after some of them...

Exactly. [Just like her words just might be distracting Mulder now. But probably not. She makes her move to try for the ball herself.]

[They come close to distracting him, or seemingly distracting him, but he's keeping a good handle on what's going on too. So he just barely manages to dodge and take a shot.]

[She makes a jump - but just a hair too late, and the ball sails towards the net.]

Ah, don't go in!

[And it's one of those ones that juuuust hangs out on the edge before falling in.]

Phew. It had me worrying there for a moment.

I'm sorry for rooting against you. [She doesn't seem very sorry, though; it's all part of the game, after all.]

Congratulations.

Not a problem at all. I'm just glad I could finally get a chance to do this.

[Having some piece of home here helps in a way.]

[Then, she's doubly glad to be here with him and give him this chance, to make him happy. Her smile widens a bit, quietly pleased.]
